Eating Disorders

For adults struggling with food, and the loved ones who hope for healing, Brighten Bay provides holistic care. Our inpatient eating disorder treatment begins with listening, then focuses on building healthy coping strategies. With personalized support and evidence-based therapy, patients build a more balanced, sustainable relationship with food and self.

What is an Eating Disorder?

An eating disorder is a serious illness that affects a person’s relationship with food. Some people may eat very little, while others may overeat or feel a strong need to control their eating.

Eating disorders are not just about hunger or willpower. They are often linked to deeper challenges, like mental health disorders, societal pressure, or trauma.

Over time, eating disorders can affect both the body and mind. They can cause weight changes, heart problems, digestive issues, dental damage, and emotional instability.

What Causes an Eating Disorder?

It’s important to recognize that disordered eating is often the result of deeper internal struggles. An eating disorder may come from:

  • Internalized societal pressures
  • Coping with trauma or strong emotions
  • Mental health disorders
  • Low self-esteem
  • Difficulty managing stress

Every individual’s experience is unique, and multiple factors, including biological, psychological, and environmental, can contribute. Understanding the underlying causes is an important step in finding the right help and moving toward lasting recovery.

The Importance of Professional Inpatient Eating Disorder Treatment

Healing from an eating disorder requires a specialized approach. Recovery means learning to live with food, not be controlled by it.

At Brighten Bay, our inpatient eating disorder program leverages evidence-based therapies to provide individualized treatment plans. Here, patients unpack harmful thoughts and behaviors so food and eating a balanced diet is no longer a source of fear or control.

Embrace Inpatient Treatment for Lasting Transformation

What to Expect During Treatment

During inpatient eating disorder treatment, patients experience a structured environment optimally designed for recovery. Each day is a blend of therapy and time for rest, reflection, and mindful movement.

Patients quickly discover a sense of community with one another. Sharing experiences, supporting each other, and learning together creates an environment of understanding and accountability.

Our treatment program also includes life skills training. We teach patients how to navigate everyday situations like grocery shopping, meal planning, and dining out. The goal is to give them the skills to return to daily life feeling prepared and capable, reducing the risk of relapse.

Therapy for Eating Disorders

At Brighten Bay, our clinical team includes experts from multiple disciplines. They work together to provide evidence-based therapy. Additionally, as a licensed dual diagnosis facility, we treat co-occurring mental health disorders.

With a consistent schedule of individual and group sessions, patients explore their thoughts and learn how emotions influence behaviors. This strengthens resilience and sets the foundation for meaningful change.

Therapies we offer at Brighten Bay include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy
  • Somatic Therapy
  • Creative Therapy
  • Equine Therapy
  • Family Therapy

Types of Eating Disorders

We treat a wide range of eating disorders to help men and women regain a life not defined by food.

Anorexia Nervosa

Restricting food and fearing weight gain, often leading to very low body weight.

Bulimia Nervosa

Eating large amounts of food, then trying to “undo” it through vomiting, exercise, or laxatives.

Binge Eating Disorder

Regularly eating a lot of food in one sitting without purging, often causing guilt or shame.

Orthorexia

Obsessing over eating only “healthy” or “clean” foods, which can interfere with daily life.

Pica

Eating things that aren’t food, like dirt, clay, or paper.

Rumination

Regurgitating food after eating, which may be re-chewed, swallowed again, or spit out.

Avoidant or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

Avoiding or limiting certain foods due to taste, texture, fear, or lack of interest in eating.

Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED)

Eating problems that cause distress or problems but don’t match any specific disorder exactly.

Signs of an Eating Disorder

The symptoms of eating disorders can look different for each person and depend on the type of disorder. While everyone’s experience is unique, there are several common signs that someone is struggling, including:

  • Irregular eating patterns, like skipping meals or extreme dieting
  • Binge eating, including compulsive overeating or night eating
  • Purging behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting or misusing diet pills
  • Distorted body image, with excessive worry about weight or appearance
  • Excessive exercise, sometimes to the point of exhaustion
  • Unintentional or unhealthy weight changes, including weight loss or gain
  • Various physical changes, like tooth sensitivity or brittle hair and nails
